Neverwhere - general reactions
Jul. 2nd, 2006 11:02 amI don't think I like making book/film/tv posts, because surely everything I say is a spoiler. Of some kind. Which will create expectation where there might otherwise have been excitement and suspense. More so with books, because you can vaguely expect people to have seen film/tv by a certain point, but books are variable, and can be read whenever.
But anyway. I read Neverwhere. The author's 'preferred text'. And I think it's ace. This is the stuff I like. This is the stuff I should be reading/watching more of, I think. Dark vaguely contemporary fantasy. It is great. Basically there is Richard Mayhew, a young Scottish investment banker in London, with a girlfriend who pushes him around, and trolls (the toys) he doesn't even like all over his desk, living a perfectly ordinary life. While somewhere underneath the city, a girl is being chased by two deeply disturbing characters called Mr Croup and Mr Vandemar. She falls into Richard's path, he takes care of her because he's really quite lovely, but as he does so unfortunately gets drawn into her world, London Below - Croup and Vandemar's world, too. There's also a sarcastic Marquis, bodyguards, angels, knights, spears, cups of tea and biro pens. I love it. It is filthy and golden. It is like dark tunnels with bright colours painted on the inside (see icon), and I think everyone should read it. And I want a sequel, but it looks sadly unlikely.
( Proper spoilery thoughts and opinions (lots) )
I think that's everything. Everything. Everything I can think of. I love Neverwhere. I am quite content for it to be one of my indie fandoms (see how I avoid the word 'rare'? For it's connotations?) I plan to watch the TV series, and possibly be disappointed, and possibly squee some more. Yay.

Jun. 26th, 2006 10:58 pmMy mother has mostly completely forgiven me for my shameful slip-up. Since you're all so TRAGICALLY CONCERNED by my plight. The Katie situation has turned slightly stressful again, so it's sort of the least of everyone's worries. I'm going to buy her something really nice when I get paid. Really really nice.
Speaking of money, I don't think I'll be getting as much as I thought I would on Wednesday/Thursday. And what with all the costs mounting up, I'm not sure I'll have much of it left by Saturday. Since I just booked a ticket for POTC2 next Thursday, I decided it was about time I ordered my graduation gown. See me 'balance' my priorities. It's good, actually, because the ceremony is 3 weeks on Thursday, and the official company can't guarantee orders within three weeks. Go me! I did not get a scarf or mascot bear. Woe.
Mostly though, I love Neverwhere. ( Non-spoilery talk about that )
In other news, Katie was here tonight, and told what she'd named my kitten 'in her head'. I need to think of a name. Fast. I still seem to be stuck on 'Flibble' though. But I really don't want to name it after a psychotic penguin handpuppet. Tell me it's a bad idea. Please?

Jun. 23rd, 2006 11:38 pmI have been reading Neverwhere. By which I mean, it's been in my bag for ages, and I occasionally read a chapter. Except that mostly I read whole bits. Just not on consecutive nights. Or weeks.
( Initial thoughts, with spoilers )
I keep distracting myself thinking about the videos/DVDs, and how I can use Region 1s. I'm refusing to think about or buy them until I've finished, and have some money, so yes. But it's slightly distracting, reading anyway, as a fanficcer, because I keep sort of not caring about the plot. Because I'm so used to thinking up AUs, perhaps. It's like it doesn't matter, because hey, it can be changed. It's the characters that matter. Except that characters are illustrated by the plot - and it's really not a very good way to read a book. I'm trying not to think about it, and just read. Because I like the book. And the plot (what there is so far). So yes. Reading.
