Today my nephew came over, and I decided to try to get on with tidying my bedroom again. Which mostly meant trying to clear out the cupboards above my wardrobe again. I didn't get very far, because I always feel the need to look through everything, and also because my nephew was here. But mostly it turned out that the box marked 'documents' in the cupboard above my wardrobe was, as I suspected, another 'memory box', only this time filled with stuff from even EARLIER than before. Including a bunch of bus passes from when I was in highschool, the letter and all the stuff I got regarding my Oxford interview, and a diary I (very) intermittently kept from being at least 12 to about 16. It was by turns strange, excruciating, and kind of sad to read. Mostly me complaining about my sister and my family. But also, in another way, quite confusingly like what I think now. Hmph. With a brief detour into things Saddam Hussein was doing when I was 12 or so, and how much I disapproved of it. Hmm. Other things in the box of mystery: some old costume jewellery I didn't want to wear anymore but apparently didn't want to throw away, maps of Lightwater Valley and Alton Towers from a lot of the school trips we went on, and some caveman-like stick drawings depicting a day with two exams on it, and a mysterious and terrifying coffee machine. Quite. Things I will probably be throwing away from this box: not many of them.

But now I've gone through that box the rest of clearing out the cupboards should be easy, as it's only stuff like old toys and pillows. I basically need to get it down, and then decide whether to throw it away or put it back up there.

It was my youngest nephew's birthday yesterday as well. We went out for a meal at a restaurant down the road, and my parents got him a new bike, which he has been out on today, so he obviously likes it. He can't quite pedal yet, but he's enjoying pushing it around all the same. And tonight I almost ended up going to a Tom Stade gig in Leeds, as basically my last shot at deciding whether he's actually funny or more of a twat, or funny enough to justify my continued interest in him even if he is kind of a twat. But I asked my mum if she wanted to go, so I wouldn't be coming back on my own, and she didn't want to decide until yesterday, and we made the massive mistake of talking about it last night at the restaurant, in front of my sister. She - invited herself along. Rather suddenly and without actually asking me or mum if we wanted her to come. It was really strange, my mum mentioned something about it, and my sister and dad didn't understand what she was talking about, so I explained it, and before I'd even finished explaining what we'd been talking about earlier, my sister said "Well, I'll come with you, and mum can have [my youngest nephew]". But not in the reasonable, offering to come with me way you are probably imagining. In a ridiculously blunt way as if she was being deliberately cheeky, except then she didn't seem to be joking. I continued to try to explain about how me and mum were thinking about going, and she said "Oh, so you're coming now?" to mum. It was SO STRANGE. And kind of awkward. I really couldn't tell if she was joking, I thought she might be, I pointed out she had two young children (who she doesn't like leaving on their own with their dad), and she just said 'so?'. And then started asking her partner if he'd mind her going out for the night. But anyway, she didn't mention it again, and when I got home I went to check if there were any tickets left for the gig, and there weren't. So. WE'RE OFF THAT SLIGHTLY STRANGE AND AWKWARD HOOK. Tom Stade has another gig in April in Leeds though. So I'm thinking about going to that one instead. But planning to get the tickets a little earlier than the day before it, hopefully.

And I also booked my tickets for London today, finally. It's like a whole extra level of commitment.

  1. I just went to see the Green Hornet with my parents. It was quite good! Cut for vague spoilers and thoughts )

  2. Oh God, Tom Stade, why? For those who don't know, Tom Stade is a fairly little-known comedian who I love. I saw him a couple of years ago on Michael Macintyre's Comedy Roadshow, and then I saw a live show of his in Nottingham, and then I saw a show of his with Cakesy in London. And he's always had some jokes that I'm not completely comfortable with, but I really do find him funny a lot of the time. But I just today got an email from a comedy mailing list I'm on about a secret gig of his, and they called him "Frankie Boyle's right hand man". I have looked into it. Apparently he co-wrote and appeared in Frankie Boyle's recent TV show Tramadol Nights, which I avoided. And, I just. Why? Except that now I feel like I can't really be angry with him for it or judge him for it, because I haven't seen the show, so I don't know exactly what was on it. But I do know he was writing a thing with Frankie Boyle, and apparently they and the other writers would sometimes sit down and think things like "'What the fuck we can write that will piss absolutely everyone off?'" Which doesn't really tally with his earlier claim that nothing they say is an attack, because it's not an attack, is just an idea they talk about. Whatever Tom Stade. God. I do really like a lot of his stand up, and his delivery and stuff. There's another article where he says that "Guys like [Michael Macintyre], they all take the road of not offending one person...I like to tread the line, sometimes...it's good to challenge people's perceptions.", which at least sounds at lot less wanky than the other stuff he was saying about writing with Frankie Boyle. I just. God, I really like him. I don't know why he has to keep hurting me.

I'm sure he's actually funny, and not just a wanker. I'm sure he's a bit of a wanker, in previous things I've seen, but wasn't just a wanker. Oh my God.

  3. In other, happier news, I got my period yesterday, so it really is a good thing I got my prescription of Mefenamic Acid. And it even came in weird, funky hot pink boxes. None of that was a bad thing.

  4. Also, I have been using the Lush solid deodorant lately. Between my mum telling me using aerosol deodorants too much can cause breast cancer, apparently, and worrying about CFCs, and not really knowing how to recycle empty aerosol cans properly, I kind of gave up using it a few months or so ago. To my parents' distaste. But I asked for some Lush stuff for Christmas, and my mum said she got a free sample of their deodorant with it, so put that in with them. And I have been using it, and it totally works! Apparently it is made with bicarbonate of soda, which is a smell that makes me want to throw up if I smell it too much, but if I only use a bit of it, it's not too bad. So. It's a recommendation from me, if anyone else was interested in changing deodorant for whatever reason. It's probably ridiculously expensive. But it does work.

I have come back from my weekend in London with [livejournal.com profile] cakesy. Over the weekend, I:

  • Went to see Love and War by the Mark Bruce Company, which I loved, with K. It was a little bit nerve racking at first because K and I didn't really agree on a place to meet up, specifically, we just said at King's Cross at about 6.30. Then she called me at 6.25 when I was on a train, just about to pull in, to say her phone was really low on battery, but that she was there, and she said she'd wait at the tube station, opposite where the ticket-buying place was. It turns out there's quite a few tube station entrances near to where you can buy tickets. And her phone was off when I tried to call again. I basically couldn't find her, and ended up having to go to the theatre to pick up our tickets, and I didn't know exactly where the theatre was, just that it was close by. It ended up being easy to find, thankfully, but K wasn't there, and she didn't turn up while I was waiting for her outside. Eventually I went inside, and the show was a bit delayed, and as I was sat there waiting for it to begin K suddenly walked over and asked for her ticket so she could give it to the nice ticketman who'd let her come in to find me. She'd been considering giving up, but then just went to an internet cafe, found out where the theatre was and come to find me. It turned out she didn't know there was a ticket buying place in King's Cross King's Cross, and had been waiting at the one in St Pancras. But anyway. She made it, and we had a great time, and the show was good, yay!

  • I had found out just before I came to London that Luke Rattigan was in a play, over the weekend, in London. And it was basically right next to where me and [livejournal.com profile] cakesy were already going to see a comedy show later that night. And she is kind and said yes, of course we can go, Rachael. So we went to see Luke Rattigan in a play. And it was very good, and he was good, and it was about gay people and gay rights in the last few decades, and when he was in the audience pretending to be a protester at an anti-gay show thing, he made out with another actor about two rows down from me. It was quite good. And the play was good. And he was good.

  • And then later on that night, as I said, we went to a comedy thing, which [livejournal.com profile] cakesy had agreed to, once again, because it was Tom Stade, and he was on in London the weekend I was in London, and I kind of love him. And he was great, and he didn't tell any jokes playing on the word 'faggot', hurrah, and he kept picking on a guy in the front row who he informed us all was called 'Heroin Jim'. Oh the things he and Heroin Jim had been up to. He was brilliant. I love him. Except for that one joke. And THEN a man came on doing comedy and magic tricks, and THEN Paul Sinha came on, and he was pretty funny too. Hurrah.

And in between all of that, [livejournal.com profile] cakesy and I watched Blades of Glory, and about 2 and a third seasons of The Office (US). Ryan is my favourite, he is young and smart and kind of amoral, but also I love Dwight, and I love Toby, and I love Oscar, and I love Angela, and I love Phyllis, and I love Stanley, and I love Pam sometimes, and I love Michael sometimes. AND OH. Pam was in Blades of Glory too, it turned out. That was quite suprising and special. Hurrah. So all in all, I had a good weekend.

Things I have decided there should be:

  • A website place, sort of like imdb, where you can check to find out if actors you like are on stage any time soon. Finding out just afterwards, sometimes, is not really good enough in my opinion.

  • A Disney kink meme. I cannot be the only one who thinks this, right? I mean, I probably could be, but I would prefer not to be. DISNEY KINK. COME ON.

  • Office AUs. The ones I came up with so far are:
    • Desert island

    • Michael is a pimp and the rest of the office are his hos.

    • Crime syndicate
And probably a bunch of others I can't remember now.

And, Coronation Street tonight )

I went to Jongleurs comedy club last night. I assumed that being a comedy club it would be something like the last comedy club I went to. Basically, a bar in which you could buy drinks and the doors to which were eventually closed so no-one could come in while the comedians were performing, and in which you could sit quietly watching said comedians. I did not expect it to be half comedy club, half nightclub. It was one of the strangest experiences of my life. First, because I didn't have a ticket, the girl behind the bar just let me pay there when I went in a few weeks ago, I didn't have a seat booked. I had to sit for a while on a stool at a little table just behind a stag party, the stag of whom ended up yelling at me about "cheering up love, it might never happen". The people eventually found me another little table, in better view of the stage, which was nice. But there were quite a few stag and hen parties in. They played loud music when the comedians weren't on, and the compere had a really blokey style of humour which I didn't much like. You know the kind of blokey that's basically offensive? That kind. Then at the end of the show, they were talking about pushing all the tables out of the way to make space for a dancefloor, so I think it actually is a sort of comedy club/night club thing. I just wasn't really expecting it.

But anyway. The comedians were the main thing I was there for. There was a female comedian on first who I really wanted to like, because she was the only woman performing, but her jokes were mainly about "looking like a lesbian", how pathetic morris dancing is when a) it occasionally has knives and is hardcore and b) according to K, is actually a little bit racist, which is potentially the main problem - and a bit about spanish female flamenco dancers having unibrows and little mustaches. So. Hmm. The next man was Welsh and a bit better. And then there was Tom Stade, who was the main reason I went to the show, because I saw him a few weeks ago on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, and thought he was a bit great, despite a potentially slightly homophobic bit. That bit was there again, but mainly he was great. There's a few clips of him on Youtube, like this one, and I understand he may not be for everyone, but I've decided I quite like him, hurrah.

Anyway. The main news is that I'm back from holiday. Devon and Rome )

And now I am home. I actually have quite a few things to talk about, but not really much time or space left in the post probably. I'm back on Jobseeker's, and hoping to get my housing benefit paid for the time I was away, which they said I might be able to. I had my first counselling appointment this week, and I was horribly late, and then the woman was in another office, but eventually we managed to get into the appointment, and she's lovely, so it was fine in the end. I saw the new Harry Potter film, I LOVE DRACO AND TOM FELTON, OH. I've been watching a lot of TV I quite like, especially Coronation Street (OH DAVID AND TONY AND MARIA) and The Supersizers Eat... (I LOVE IT, and the last episode is tomorrow, but that's fine because I was pretty sure the last episode was last week). And no-one told me Dragon's Den was back on. And there's other stuff. But as I say, this post's getting kind of long as it is. So goodnight x
